Ph.D. in Applied Organizational Psychology

Program Requirements

  1. The Program requires students to complete 96 credits beyond the bachelor's degree. Seventy-two credits core courses required of all students: 41 credits in research methods and statistics and 31 credits in disciplines related to human behavior in organizations. The remaining 24 credits are elective courses chosen from advanced research methods and statistics, psychology, anthropology, sociology, economics, and business.
  2. A maximum of 44 credits may be transferred from prior graduate level work. All transferred courses must be equivalent to corresponding courses in the Program. The maximum number of transfer credits is subject to the basic regulations governing doctoral programs at Hofstra University.
  3. A qualifying examination must be taken and passed immediately upon completion of the first year in the Program. This examination will be given in June and August of each year. Students who fail the qualifying examination twice will be dropped from the Program. Students who have already passed the qualifying examination given in Hofstra's M.A. Program in I/O Psychology will not have to take this examination.
  4. Students must maintain a B average each semester with no more than one C per semester and no more than two Cs toward the Ph.D. degree. Students who do not meet these requirements, will be placed on probation.
  5. Students must demonstrate satisfactory interpersonal and professional behavior, with no documented reports of unprofessional or unethical conduct.
  6. A research dissertation must be completed.
  7. The student must pass an oral examination based on the completed dissertation.
